Auto Insurance Information

What is auto insurance?

Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident.

The story of insurance is beyond paying a premium. The premium is your umbrella, and the type of coverage you have determines how wide your umbrella will be.
For Auto Insurance, there are two main types of coverage; Full and Liability.

Full Coverage is a wide umbrella that protects you and whomever you have an accident with. Now, suppose you are at fault and you have totaled not just another person’s car, but also yours, Full Coverage is a guarantee from your insurance company that your car and the other person’s car will be repaired. There is usually a deductable involved-that is the minimal amount you agree to pay in exchange for the insurance company’s burden of your costs to your vehicle while they take care of the other vehicle at no cost.

Liability Insurance, on the other hand, deals with damages you commit to other vehicles. Its protection is that it puts your insurance company as the mediator and settler in every financial matter that involves the damage you have caused to others. Think of it as the insurance company giving others your umbrella so they won’t get wet.

Under both coverages, you see language like Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury, Property Damage, Medical Bodily Injury Liability, etc. These are not just items on your bill to confuse you, they are the specific protections given to you by the company. If you have a limit of $1,000 in medical payments, it means the insurance company will be willing to pay up to $1,000 in medical payments if you have no health insurance. Anything that goes above will come from your pocket. Likewise, if you have a limit of $20,000 in Property Damage, the company will be willing to pay up to $20,000 on your behalf.
